The Sanctuary and the Character of God

Few Adventist doctrines have been as misunderstood—both inside and outside the church—as the sanctuary and the investigative judgment. Critics often portray the doctrine as a theological mechanism that undermines assurance of salvation, while defenders sometimes present it in ways that unintentionally reinforce those fears.

This research project will explore the sanctuary motif as Scripture presents it: not primarily as a system of anxiety about human performance, but as a revelation of God’s character and the moral transparency of His judgment. From the tabernacle of Exodus to the heavenly ministry of Christ in Hebrews and Revelation, the sanctuary narrative portrays a God who does not rule through coercion but who invites the universe to see the justice and mercy of His redemptive work. Properly understood, the sanctuary reveals that the final judgment is not a threat to the gospel—it is the public vindication of it.
